1. What is diamond powder?
Diamond powder refers to diamond particles with a particle size of less than 36/54 μm. It is divided into single crystal diamond powder and polycrystalline diamond powder. Due to the large output of single crystal diamond powder and the wide range of applications, the industry generally refers to diamond powder as single crystal diamond powder. Single crystal diamond powder is produced by static pressing method of synthetic diamond single crystal abrasive grain, after crushing, shaping treatment, using superhard material special process method production. Diamond powder has high hardness and good wear resistance, and can be widely used in cutting, grinding, drilling, polishing, etc. It is an ideal raw material for grinding and polishing high-hardness materials such as cemented carbide, ceramics, gemstones, and optical glass.
2. How to evaluate the quality of diamond powder?
The quality of diamond powder can be evaluated from five aspects: powder strength, particle size composition, large particles, particle shape, and impurity content. For the four indicators of particle size composition, large particles, particle shape, and impurity content, there are more mature methods for testing, and the quality of these aspects of micropowder has been better controlled. Therefore, the strength of diamond powder has become the main factor affecting product quality. The strength of diamond powder cannot be directly measured by mechanical methods. Most of the production and application enterprises still rely on experience, making the quality of the diamond powder produced difficult to control.
3. Diamond powder strength evaluation, Oceanhood Raman spectroscopy test protocols
For example, the raman spectroscopic detection scheme characterizes the crystallization state and internal defects of the powder by using the Raman characteristic peak position, intensity and fluorescence background of the diamond powder. Thus evaluating the strength of diamond powder is a scientific, effective, fast and non-destructive testing method.
Five microns are detected using a Portman 532 Raman spectrometer such as the Sea, where #1, #2 and #5 are three diamond powders of different particle sizes, and #3 and #4 are two other types of micropowders (#3-SiC, #4-garnet).
The above figure is the Raman spectra of 5 kinds of micropowders, from which many Raman spectral peaks can be observed, of which near 1332cm-1 is the first-order Raman spectral line of diamond, representing the active ingredient of diamond powder. 3140cm-1 is related to the composition and content of crystal impurities and internal defects in the crystal. The fluorescence intensity after 1800cm-1 is related to the internal defects of the micronized powder, and the stronger the fluorescence signal, the greater the internal defects of the crystal and the lower the strength of the material. Near 790cm-1 is the A1 vibrational band of SiC.
After de-baselineting the Raman spectra of #1, #2 and #5, it was obvious that the peaks of the three diamond powders at 1332cm-1 were shifted to varying degrees. Studies have shown that the degree of peak shift is related to the particle size of the powder. The particle sizes of the three micropowders are observed from the figure #2> #1> #5.
4. Conclusion
Oceanhood Portman532 Raman Spectrometer can characterize the active ingredient, particle size, impurity composition and content of diamond powder and internal defect information. It can evaluate the strength of diamond powder scientifically, quickly and non-destructively, and provide assistance for the quality control of diamond powder manufacturers.
